The Camden Learning Early Career Teacher (ECT) Programme provides a high‑quality, structured and nurturing introduction to the profession. Delivered in partnership with UCL’s Centre for Educational Leadership, the programme combines nationally recognised research with deep local expertise. Through a blend of expert mentoring, face‑to‑face training and collaborative professional networks, ECTs develop the confidence, skills and professional identity needed to thrive in Camden’s diverse and vibrant school communities.
What the Programme Offers
A clear, supportive two‑year pathway
ECTs follow a carefully sequenced curriculum that introduces key principles of effective teaching in Year 1 and deepens practice through enquiry and reflection in Year 2.
Face‑to‑face training rooted in Camden’s context
Sessions are facilitated by experienced Camden practitioners who understand local strengths and challenges, ensuring training feels relevant and immediately applicable.
Strong professional relationships
Primary and secondary ECTs meet regularly as phase groups at face-to-face sessions, building supportive networks that foster collaboration, shared problem‑solving and professional confidence.
Expert mentoring
Each ECT is matched with a trained mentor in school who provides weekly developmental meetings, tailored guidance and opportunities to connect research with classroom practice.
Enhanced subject- and phase‑specific sessions
ECTs benefit from additional Camden‑designed training such as reading, writing and maths development, trauma‑informed practice, inclusion, behaviour, and subject‑specific pedagogy.
Celebration and community
We begin each year with a welcome event for all ECTs and mentors, and end with a celebration of achievements—recognising the growth, commitment and impact of new teachers across Camden.
Pathway
Year 1: Building Strong Foundations
Year 1 focuses on the core Early Career Framework content, delivered through six modules supported by UCL resources and Camden’s enhanced programme. ECTs explore essential aspects of teaching—routines, relationships, inclusive practice, subject knowledge and curriculum design—through practical, classroom‑focused training.
Year 2: Deepening Practice Through Inquiry
In Year 2, ECTs work more independently, undertaking a classroom‑based inquiry project that strengthens their professional identity. They meet as phase groups, visit other schools and explore how to evaluate the impact of their teaching over time.
A framework of support
- Induction Tutors oversee the programme in schools and ensure entitlements are met.
- Mentors provide weekly structured meetings and tailored developmental support.
- Guided Self‑Study ensures learning is closely connected to classroom practice.
- Appropriate Body oversight ensures statutory induction requirements are met throughout the two years.
- Facilitators lead the face to face training, connecting school-based learning with the course content.
Join a professional community that cares
Teaching in Camden means being part of a community that values excellence, equity and collaboration. The ECT Programme ensures that new teachers feel welcomed, supported and ready to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people.
