Despite the incredible advances in technology over the last 20 years, reading books have held their place in how we expect young people to engage with much of their reading. The power of reading and ensuring quality reading texts for young people remains as important now as it was in the dark ages of when I was learning to read. This is true at all stages of education and finding texts and catch up reading programmes that will switch on reading for the more reluctant or struggling readers is not always easy. I think we all recognise and recognise the influence literacy has on pupils’ future academic achievement, wellbeing and success in life. Curriculum leaders need to have a deep understanding of the complex pedagogy of literacy, including the teaching of reading, oracy and writing skills. Reading is one of the key strands in our education strategy, and Camden Learning are also running an NPQ in leading literacy for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading literacy across a school, year group, key stage or phase. Here is the hyperlink for staff to apply. Candidates select ‘Education Development Trust’ as provider and thereafter they select Camden Learning as delivery partner. The closing date is 10th October. At the Primary update briefing this week we had reminders about ensuring time to rehearse for the Camden festival of music (on April 24th 2023 save the date!), the hubs and NPQ’s that are on offer to schools, the transition arrangements for 2023 (also in this bulletin) and the teacher and support staff pay award that Unison have agreed to – more information of which is being put together to send to schools. On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of meeting our new cohort of Early Careers Teachers who attended a welcome event at 5 Pancras Square. They were clearly enjoying a positive experience of being in Camden schools, no doubt aided by the support that has been organised to ensure they are successful in those sometimes difficult first terms of teaching. Attracting and keeping the best talent to Camden is something that I think we can all agree is essential, so I hope the warm welcome, nibbles, and the glamour of the 11th floor balcony at 5PS has helped with this!

Enjoy the weekend when it arrives for you, and make sure you take some time for yourself.

Best wishes
