The awful events in Euston last weekend impacted on some of our schools directly, and all Camden communities in some way. The work that was undertaken to reassure unsettled children, parents and staff once again highlighted the central role of schools in their communities. It is privilege to earn the trust of a local community, and the immediate experience that parents have when visiting a school or speaking with school staff makes a real difference. This has never been more evident than now when so many are already facing challenges related to the cost of living crisis. We saw from the pandemic how much children benefit from the stability of the routines and expectations of coming to school, and whilst we cannot control everything that goes on around us, creating an oasis of calm and learning is something that schools can do. Thank you for all your work during the last week to reassure your school community and, of course, at other times too.

As you have seen the planned NEU teacher strikes will affect Camden schools on 1st February, 2nd, 15th and 16th March. In light of the impact on pupils of school closures, I know many of you are doing all you can to stay open but I understand too that is not going to be possible in all instances. You will be aware that the Government guidance outlines some flexibilities that could be considered to keep aspects of provision open. However, I understand some of that may conflict with advice you are receiving from some unions. HR is now looking at this and all the questions primary heads collated yesterday and hope to have responses with you as soon as possible. We want to provide as much support as we can to schools during this difficult time and have therefore organised an meeting for all Camden Headteachers next Tuesday at 1:30pm to allow an opportunity to share understanding and ask further questions The decision about whether, and how, a school can stay safely open, remains with the Headteacher but we ask you to inform us of your intentions by midday next Wednesday if possible using this online form. Please note this information will only be used for internal purposes and will not be shared externally. The organisation of this, and associate decision making is not something that any of you will want to be doing, you have our full support in the decisions you make.

Thank you for everything you do
