Discover Camden’s Creative Pulse: The Inaugural Art Biennale at Central Saint Martins

Camden’s vibrant art scene came alive at the inaugural Camden Schools Art Biennale, a spectacular event that transformed Granary Square, King’s Cross into a canvas of imagination and creativity. Hosted by the prestigious Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, in collaboration with Camden Council and Camden Learning, this event marked a new chapter in the borough’s rich artistic legacy.

From July 11 to 17, the Lethaby Gallery within Central Saint Martins opened its doors to the public, revealing a treasure trove of artistic talent. The exhibition was a visual feast, featuring an array of artworks crafted by the hands of Camden’s youngest artists, representing every school and stage of learning—from the colorful expressions of primary and special schools to the sophisticated compositions of A-level students.

In preparation for this grand showcase, artists and educators joined forces, engaging with schools across the borough to nurture and refine the students’ artistic contributions. This hands-on approach not only enriched the students’ experience but also laid the groundwork for what will become a landmark event in Camden’s cultural calendar.

The Biennale was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, drawing in over 5,000 visitors who marveled at the creativity on display. Its success has cemented its future as a biennial event, poised to run parallel to the beloved Camden Schools Music Festival, which brings musical talents from across Camden to the iconic Royal Albert Hall biennially.

Complementing the visual spectacle was a curated programme of free events, thoughtfully designed to engage families, youth, and educators. These activities aimed to reinforce the value of art education in Camden and beyond, positioning the borough as a hub for artistic excellence in the UK.

Looking forward, the Biennale aspires to weave a stronger fabric of connection between educational institutions, arts organizations, and the business community. It seeks to illuminate the myriad career paths in art, design, and creative industries for students, while also celebrating the diverse tapestry of Camden’s youth, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those from less represented backgrounds.

This pioneering initiative, supported by the King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership and John Lyon’s Charity, is more than just an exhibition—it’s a movement. It’s a celebration of the boundless creativity that thrives within Camden, and an invitation to the world to witness the artistic potential that flourishes in our schools.

Join us as we continue to champion the arts and nurture the next generation of creatives in Camden.
