This year’s Every Child Reading by 7 (ECR7) professional development series wrapped up with three impactful events:
– The concluding ‘Removing Barriers to Reading’ session at The British Library
– A gathering for both primary and secondary Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENDCOs)
– A tailored session for Year 7 educators.
Each event showcased the ECR7 flowchart for Key Stages 1 and 2, offering guidance to practitioners on aiding children who face challenges in learning to read. The discussions centered on effective interventions and stressed the necessity of phonics assessment and remediation of any understanding gaps, irrespective of the child’s age.
Case studies of three Year 7 students requiring continued reading support were presented to secondary teachers, while SENDCOs participated in a live ‘inference training’ intervention session.
A highlight was the ‘Removing Barriers to Reading’ twilight event’s enthralling storytelling session by The British Library, underscoring the importance and impact of storytelling.
