Our latest Governor Diversity Annual Report highlights our ongoing efforts to enhance diversity within governing bodies and outlines our future initiatives.

Alignment with Camden’s 2030 Mission

The report supports Camden’s 2030 mission to ensure that leadership reflects the community’s diversity, in line with the Department for Education’s guidance. Embracing diversity fosters inclusivity, provides diverse role models, and enhances decision-making by incorporating various perspectives and avoiding groupthink.

Survey Insights

From the last academic year:

  • Ethnicity: Approximately 60% of Camden’s governors are White British, indicating underrepresentation of other ethnicities.
  • Gender: Women constitute about 60% of governors.
  • Disability: The proportion of governors reporting a disability exceeds the borough’s population average.
  • Age: Only 25% of governors are under 45, highlighting a need for younger representation.

Initiatives and Achievements

  • Young Governors’ Programme: This initiative has successfully placed 13 young individuals (aged 18-30) on governing bodies.
  • Global Majority Governors Network: Launched in partnership with Islington Council, this network offers networking opportunities and discussions on diversity-related themes.

Community Engagement

Last year, we promoted the role of governors at various local events, including Moving On, Windrush, and Camden Melas. These efforts resulted in 37 information requests and nine new applications, significantly increasing the diversity of backgrounds and ages among new candidates.

Future Plans

We aim to:

  • Deepen community engagement.
  • Increase the use of social media.
  • Closely monitor candidate uptake.
  • Commission additional central training sessions to support diversity.
  • Ensure in-school training reaches more governors.

Our commitment to diversity remains steadfast as we continue to build governing bodies that truly reflect our community.
