Today sees the publication of our latest Annual Report into Governor Diversity, outlining our ongoing work to strengthen the diversity, effectiveness, and representativeness of governing bodies across Camden’s schools.
Camden’s school governors play a vital role in shaping the direction of our schools, supporting headteachers and senior leaders, and ensuring that every child in Camden has access to an ambitious, inclusive education.
Camden Learning remains committed to the vision set out in Building Back Stronger to enable an ambitious, inclusive education system where school governance reflects the diversity, strengths and lived experiences of Camden’s communities. Over the past four years, the Diversity Survey has helped us develop a clearer picture of representation across our governing bodies.
The data shows steady and positive movement. This year saw a modest increase in responses and, encouragingly, a moderate rise in the proportion of Black and Asian governors serving on boards. However, the report also highlights areas where representation remains uneven and while progress is evident, it is clear that the work is not complete.
Alongside the survey data, 2024-25 has seen the continued growth of networks and initiatives that are helping to shape more inclusive governance.
The Global Majority Governors Network (GMGN) continues to provide an important space for connections, peer support, and shared learning.
The Young Governors Initiative is also building a pipeline of younger and more diverse school governors. These governors bring fresh perspectives, professional expertise and lived experience that enrich board discussions and decision-making.
Beyond governance, Camden Learning’s Black, Global Majority and Heritage (BGMH) Educators Network, delivered in partnership with the London Diocesan Board for Schools (LDBS) Platform Programme, is supporting Black and Global Majority Heritage educators to connect, develop professionally and explore leadership pathways in Camden schools. These initiatives reflect a joined-up commitment to representation.
Looking ahead to 2026-27, our priorities are to strengthen our ongoing surveying of representation to inform understanding across the borough, build the next phase of the Young Governors Initiative, and further develop the GMGN’s role in supporting connections, mentoring and outreach. We’ll also enhance engagement with community networks, support governing bodies to reflect on board composition and succession, and reduce practical barriers to participation through clear vacancy information and accessible meeting arrangements.
The foundations built over the past four years provide a strong platform for the next phase of work centred on collaboration, representation, robust monitoring, and meaningful inclusion across every part of Camden’s education system.
We are grateful to every governor who volunteers their time, insight and steady commitment to Camden’s schools. Your contribution strengthens our community and helps to ensure that our schools remain welcoming, inclusive places for children to learn and thrive.
