Stephen Hall announces his retirement as CEO of Camden Learning

After much reflection, and nearly three decades working in education, I have decided to retire at the end of this calendar year.  I am looking forward to dedicating more time to the many personal interests, people and causes that are close to my heart and I’ve long hoped to pursue.

Leading Camden Learning for the past four years has been a great privilege and I am incredibly proud of all that we continue to achieve together as an organisation and with schools.

When I joined the organisation in 2022, schools were still recovering from the impact of the pandemic and our education strategy, Building Back Stronger, was in the earliest stages of implementation.

With the company having grown in both size and influence, we have been on an exciting journey continuing to champion a deeply collaborative approach, bringing schools together to share expertise and support one another.  Just as importantly, Camden Learning has grown as a system – bringing schools together to support one another, share expertise, and tackle challenges collectively. Initiatives such as Every Child Reading by 7, Rights Respecting Schools, expanded school partnerships, our investment in leadership and early career development alongside UCL, and our pioneering work in digital learning and AI, all reflect the ambition and creativity of this community.

None of this would have been possible without the commitment, openness and generosity of Camden’s headteachers, governors and all school staff. I am clear that Camden’s strength lies in its people and its partnerships, and I am deeply grateful for the role you continue to play in this journey and inspired by your contributions.

While this is a moment of change, it is also a moment of great confidence. Camden Learning is in a strong position as it approaches its second decade and there is a clear sense of purpose and a shared commitment to equity and excellence that will continue to guide us. Over the coming term I’ll be working closely with the Camden Learning Board and Leadership team to ensure a smooth transition whilst they recruit my fortunate successor. After that, I am excited to look forward to the next chapter and opportunities that lie ahead.

Dame Jane Roberts, Chair of the Camden Learning Board, adds:

Stephen’s leadership has been hugely instrumental in building the strong, resilient company we are today. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank him for his contribution and absolute dedication.

While this is a moment of change, it is also a moment of great confidence. Camden Learning is in a strong position as it approaches its second decade, and there is a clear sense of purpose and a shared commitment to equity and excellence that will continue to guide the organisation.
